Course Purpose

of the Flies by William Golding. Both pieces of literature are tragedies. Hamlet is a drama in which the main character is brought to ruin as a consequence of a tragic flaw, a moral weakness, or his inability to cope (you decide what is the consequence of his downfall). Lord of the Flies (LOTF) is a fictional tragedy that depicts the calamitous events of a group of young boys trapped on a deserted island, which has an unhappy yet meaningful ending. During this course, we will look as these two pieces within the scope of what they are--tragedies. We will also look more closely at the characters and their struggles with the idea of being civilized or savage, a theme which is apparent in both selections. This struggle is vivid when characters are foiled against nature, society, other characters, and themselves. Lastly, we will think deeply about the characters from both selections and determine what they might symbolize; we will think about allegory. Tragedy, the struggle with the civilized and savage, the complexities of characters, and allegoryawhat an adventure we will have!
